We’ve never received a warmer B&B welcome than at the Pigeon House in Southam in the heart of the Cotswolds (perfect for the Cotswolds Way). Set in a lovely garden (in full bloom when we were there in Spring), this beautifully restored stone cottage sits in the centre of a tiny cluster of medieval and Norman buildings, including an adjoining tithe barn. Staying here you could be an extra in Midsomer Murders, though we were certainly charmed rather than terrified by the cosy rooms (roaring fire in the sitting room), comfy bed (duvet - not sheets and blankets!) and delicious organic breakfast. Our genial host went way beyond the call of duty, ferrying us to and from the local, award-winning pub. In the morning we found that our muddy walking boots had been discreetly scraped clean, ready for the day ahead! The Pigeon House is everything you want from an English B&B – we left happy and well rested.

Save money and volunteer at a festival - get in free for one night shift or 10 - 15 hours of duties such as stewarding, working behind a bar or in a cafe, doing stage duties or security. Meet new people, learn new skills and put something back - some festival volunteers support a charity such as Oxfam. You also often get your own superior camping facilities and free refreshments. Look out for 'volunteer' or 'stewards' links on official festival websites and plan ahead, especially for more popular festivals, such as Glastonbury.
