Pallant House Gallery

Posted by alocal 10 January 2011

Love Picasso? Cezanne? Hepworth? Piper? European and British 20th Century modern art? Chichester's Pallant House Gallery has it all, in a fab modern gallery attached to a gracious 1712 town house. Ancient and modern in one. A dreamy view of the cathedral, friendly staff and volunteer guides, a restaurant overlooking a leafy courtyard garden, a good book shop, art library, talks, workshops and community involvement. Shame you've just missed artists' Christmas cards in the print room, but now you can enjoy Garrick Palmer's wood engravings instead. There's such variety, something for everybody, but without cultural indigestion. Spend an hour or a day here. Stand and stare, be inspired, perhaps even take part in making art.

Kingly Vale

Posted by felix23 11 October 2010

Forget the colours of autumn; this place is sombre in colour and atmosphere but you will be walking among probably the oldest living organisms in Britain. The yew trees here are up to 2000 years old! Think about it! What sort of people might have been walking in the area when they were saplings? And if you do go on a sunny day and climb higher up the nature reserve out of the trees you will discover fabulous views over the Downs.

NW of Chichester. Turn off the B2178 road from Chichester to East Ashling near East Ashling signposted to West Stoke then follow signs for the Nature Reserve from the village.

Walking among the twisted trunks and bows of ancient trees is an unforgettable experience. At Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve in West Sussex a grove of gnarled old yews cast a claustrophobic darkness over the ground. As you emerge from the blackness, the surrounding chalk grassland comes as something of a relief. Here you will find Bronze Age burial sites, and extensive views across the South Downs.

West Stoke Village Hall

Posted by sarah010849 22 August 2009

Every Sunday through August, this small rural village hall, situated in stunning countryside near Chichester, does an excellent cream tea with scones, jam and a vast selection of cakes - all made in the village by whichever community group is hosting the afternoon. Sitting outside on the grass or seated in the hall, the volunteer waitresses provide a warm welcome and efficient service! All this for under £5.00.
