A great place to see as well as hear wonderful birds - nightjars. They look quirky, but it's their wing-flapping and especially their unusual call that's the great thing about them. They make a churring sound - churrrrrrr - that can go on for a long time! It can sound very spooky as they do this at night. The best time to see them is in May between 8 - 10 pm. Stay at Cliff House camping and caravan site and you'll be right on their doorstep!

The truth is, every time I’ve done the Dunwich beach walk, scrunching along marvelling at the fact that the place was once a mile inland, I’ve been frozen by icy spray, or blinded by driving sleet. But that’s the secret pleasure of this bracing Suffolk coastal walk, anticipating a real fire, home cooked food and real ale at the cosy Ship Inn. Next summer I’ll stay at the inn (children and dogs welcome), venture into the conservatory and garden, and explore Dunwich Heath for nightjars and butterflies. Meanwhile, as you walk on the beach, listen carefully - you might hear the ghostly bells of All Saints Church, long ago drowned by the encroaching sea.

My parents will happily make a pilgramage from Northamptonshire to Suffolk just for fish and chips, such is the quality of the experience at the Flora Tea Rooms. Beautifully fresh fish in crispy batter, served in friendly, down to earth surroudings. Eat in the wooden cafe or on picnic tables almost on the beach. They do great home-made doughnuts too! Simply follow the signs for the beach car park.
