McKirdy's is a steakhouse run by a butcher. Need I say more! The steak is second to none and combined with good prices and a relaxed but fun atmosphere it is a must go when hungry in Edinburgh! Trust me, I'm a farmer.

This is a great little curry restaurant in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh. It's not fancy but the food is excellent. The naan breads in particular are something to behold!

The best Mexican food I have eaten outside the States. The interior is bright and used authentic Mexican colours and the food is fab. I especially loved the carnitas which took me back home to Santa Fe. Worth a visit.

Traditional recipes, excellent portions and a taste you will never get anywhere else in Edinburgh.
They are now based in Victoria Street and Altaf has got a wee bit up hisself as he has turned a £2k a week cafe into a mega money making machine, prices are now at their optimum and I go maybe four times a year when previously I could be there twice a week. Still the best though.

Easily the best, and best value, place to get curry in Edinburgh. Just a handful of tables, no hurry service, everything cooked to order, and massive platefuls you'll struggle to finish.
Cheap, cheerful, and unbeatable. Very popular with locals and students, but with a very diverse customer profile (based on looking at who's in!). Worth coming to Edinburgh for. No, really!

Odd name for a restaurant, I know, but what a restaurant. Easily the best curry in Edinburgh! And I should know - I was born and bred in Bradford!
Consistently tasty, very friendly staff, great for a romantic meal for two, or for a small number of friends, not so good for large parties, which means it's nice and quiet. Lamb tikka is superb, great pilau rice and succulent sultana naans. Wonderful!

As Parisian as the Seine, as Scottish as Cairngorm, this is a shining gem in a grottier bit of the city.
Great food, great service - well worth looking it out, but do book.

This is probably the best Indian Restaurant in Edinburgh, however, what it lacks is its location.
It's not on a main road or thoroughfare, but don't let that put you off. You'll find it tucked just behind the Royal Museum of Scotland and the Festival Theatre.
Friendly and inviting staff - and great food. No artificial flavouring here just fresh tasting food...oh and ice cold Kingfisher on tap as well!

Excellent fish restaurant in local area of Marchmont, just 15 minutes' walk from city centre through the lovely Meadows.
The local fish shop is next door so you know whatever's on the menu is as fresh as it's going to get. We had the salt and pepper squid to start with which I would happily eat again and again and the Thai chicken soup which was flavoured to perfection and contained an abundance of chicken. There are other fish, meat and vegetarian starters.
For mains we chose roast fillets of red snapper, sea bass with cockles, mussels and fennel and pernod sauce and also a grilled duck-breast with a jus of wine and blackcurrant sauce. Both outstanding with fantastic flavours and succulent flesh.
Make sure you leave room for pudding, especially the warm hazelnut and chocolate pudding and also a scrumptious sticky toffee pudding.
Staff are friendly and efficient and the cooking in the kitchen is some of the best you will experience in Edinburgh.
Starters are about £5 and mains about £13.

Restaurant which is cool and intimate and with a great view from the windows at the back over the old town and the castle. Best of all is the food - groovy fusion cooking with delicious subtle flavours and very healthy ingredients complemented by excellent wines described egregiously by the proprietor. Hours for lunch are handy - all afternoon - but also good for dinner and in a great part of the town for other features.

George IV Bridge between Greyfriars and the High Street. Quarter of an hour's walk from the Waverley Station and the Mound.
This modern Indian restaurant is tucked away on Rose Street North between Princes and George Street. Not a salubrious location but well worth seeking out. The food is sublime, tasty, imaginative, well presented and unlike any Indian food I have ever been offered. Both food and wine prices very reasonable.

La Camargue is a French brasserie in Leith not too far from the Royal Yacht Britannia. A large lobster hangs over the door which does give you a clue that it is very much seafood orientated. What do you expect? Leith is a port after all! It does however cater for meat eaters as well, so fear not.
A two course of starter and main costs £16 and is good value. Starters include lobster soup, mussels, oysters and salmon. Mains range from fish such as Dover sole and halibut to meat such as venison and steak. Check out the website for the menu, but for £16 it allowed me to try things I have never tried before such as oysters. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The bar next door, Cameo bar, is worth a visit as well.

It's not swish or swanky or in a prime location with stunning vistas of the city, but is nevertheless worth a visit. One of the city's first Mexican restaurants, it's still the finest. Obviously, it does great margaritas, and the food isn't bad either, but most important of all, the staff are friendly and the place unpretentious. In a Stockbridge basement, you'll even forgive the outdoor toilets such is the warmth of the reception.

To my knowledge, the greatest sausage and mash restaurant around. Three types of sausage, three types of mash, three types of gravy, plus specials - mix and match your way to mash heaven. Champ with pork and apple and onion gravy, if you're asking.

Pataka is simply one of the best Indian restaurants ever - with no flock wallpaper or fake Indian music. It's decorated in the style of Rennie Mackintosh and the food (plus the service, atmosphere etc) is simply wonderful. If you don't believe me, ask Inspector Rebus. He goes there!

Always best to eat where the locals do. This restaurant just up from Haymarket Station is one of the best in town for fairly priced, imaginative Scottish food with a twist. Book ahead as the locals love it!
