A city with a big heart, from home made chocolate snowballs at The University Cafe (a Glaswegian institution that hasn’t changed since it opened in 1918) on Byres Road, a stroll round the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, lunch in the Merchant City, a peruse down the ‘style mile’ in the afternoon and a candle lit dinner at night. This is a city you can enjoy being lost in. But, ultimately, it’s the people that make Glasgow - even in the rain they have a smile for everyone. I would absolutely recommend No.1 Devonshire Gardens, an indulgent experience, where they will do their best to upgrade your room for free. My boyfriend doesn’t believe in Valentines Day - he says I hoodwinked him into it, but I know this city will always hold a special place in our hearts - may even move there one day.

    Glasgow hotels

It seems that with the credit crunch UK hotels are doing great deals. I just stayed at the Millennium a four star right in the centre of Glasgow. It was only £69 per night including breakfast and dinner ! The offer is still valid - how long can they do deals like this ?

    Castle Accommodation

Posted by Gfoz 28 May 2008

I recently stayed in a self-catering castle with friends in Scotland. With all the talk of the downturn in the economy, maybe we should consider holidaying within UK and Europe.

A company called Celtic Castles offer castle accommodation all around the UK, Ireland and France. Some have been converted into hotels while others (like Castle Law that I stayed in) are now self-catering properties.

The thing I was surprised about was how little it cost. It worked out at less than 100 pounds per person per night, there are some offers available at the moment so this will be even less now.

    Definitely worth considering!

Friendly and comfortable Scottish family-run hotel. Very relaxing for a weekend away.

On the doorstep of The Isle of Arran, great golf courses and other attractions.

Very nice restaurant and bar, and the rooms were very clean and comfortable too.

I booked for a few days and have since rebooked twice. It is ideally located for seeing the city, the nightlife which is student fantastic but it is also really comfortable and as you must have student/international i.d. the other guests are really cosmopolitan and interesting. Facilities are spot on and abundant. It is spotless and well run.

This is a newly built backpackers hostel, the first in the city to be purpose built but to come with lots of free off-street parking is a huge boon to the car hire afficionados who can whisk into the city and find plentiful free parking. Rooms are for groups of four and six and the facilities in ornate Italian marble are ultra modern and new.

Quaint and quirky with a 650-year- old account of the French-Scots alliance exhibition.

Six by four paintings of William Wallace from etchings at his memorials in Smithfield london and birthplace Elderslie Renfrewshire, two stops from central station and a fair sample of Charles Rennie Makintosh's work and the Burrell collection. This is no run of the mill youth hostel.

Also has a super location opposite the city's Mitchell library and its 100 free computer/internet facilities and around the corner from the exhibition centre.

Attracts an international crowd and has plentiful showers and comfy lounges. Best to book at weekends.

This traditional pub in the Merchant City, Glasgow has a very nice and relaxed atmosphere. No background music, the emphasis is on conversation. Very good pub food at more than reasonable prices. There is also a restaurant on the first floor, with a good variety of game, and they even offer accommodation. A very friendly and relaxed place to meet friends and make some new ones.

Sleek and stylish are the watchwords with this hotel, a converted Greek church in the heart of the city, where you are guaranteed a luxurious stay. Fabulous.
