A city with a big heart, from home made chocolate snowballs at The University Cafe (a Glaswegian institution that hasn’t changed since it opened in 1918) on Byres Road, a stroll round the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, lunch in the Merchant City, a peruse down the ‘style mile’ in the afternoon and a candle lit dinner at night. This is a city you can enjoy being lost in. But, ultimately, it’s the people that make Glasgow - even in the rain they have a smile for everyone. I would absolutely recommend No.1 Devonshire Gardens, an indulgent experience, where they will do their best to upgrade your room for free. My boyfriend doesn’t believe in Valentines Day - he says I hoodwinked him into it, but I know this city will always hold a special place in our hearts - may even move there one day.

Service was excellent with a very warm welcome on the two nights we ate there.

Don't be put off by the formica tables and cheesy prints, for Chinese food in Glasgow this is the real deal. One of the few places in UK where you can discuss your meal with the waitress. Forget sweet and sour chicken - it's not that kind of place. Be prepared to wait in a queue on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Italian Kitchen is based in the merchant city area of Glasgow and offers a menu full of authentic Italian cuisine.
This is the best diner in Glasgow. Great menu range, bucks fizz on offer and all sitting on old corporation train seats. A real find!

Italian owned (and staffed) coffee house and pizza/pasta place halfway along Byers Road in the West End.
Go there for the best pizza and coffee in the city, friendly and efficient service and a great perch to watch some of the weird and wonderful locals amble past.
Great to take a friend or sit with the papers and watch the world go by.
Three great restaurants. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere; superb fish with stunning desserts - the trio of creme brulee was superb and enough to share.
Not cheap but worth every penny. Don't miss it - the two TV chefs borrowed the name, with permission. Named after the first to open at 88 Dumbarton Road.

A great restaurant which offers good discounts to guests at Globetrotters Backpackers hostel. It has a Pharsee section which is Persian so really the restaurant has quite a few menus to choose from.

Great restuarant on Dumbarton Road in the West End, just a little further down the road from the Partick railway bridge. Fantastic, honest and well-prepared Scottish food with an interesting, ever-changing menu.
Friendly, non-pretentious service. Always busy and lively. Bring-your-own wine policy means that this is always a cheap place to visit.
The neighbourhood isn't the greatest but don't let that put you off. We have returned and returned and returned and returned!

An organic bakery and cafe selling fresh, tasty food, with cosy atomsphere and friendly service. By far the healthest place in the east end of Glasgow, a place notorious for poor health statistics. It's fun too - worth the trip.

Monorail is an incredibly cool, independent record shop, with a loads of vinyl alongside the racks of hard-to-find CDs. Especially good for underground Japanese music and European jazz, it stocks a really varied range of music plus magazines/fanzines. The shop is situated within vegan bar/restaurant Mono, which also hosts live music and album launches etc in conjunction with the record shop.

This is a modern recreation of one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's competition designs and it's simply stunning. It's been meticulously matched to the drawings he provided and extra design features from his wife Margaret MacDonald and is a great example of his vision for family living. There's also a great restaurant in the basement!

If you need to absorb the excess of the night before, or stock up before a day in town, get a full breakfast here. This is Glasgow/Italian fusion cuisine at its best; no nonsense, honest and affordable. The Italian sausage is fantastic and the coffee is how it should be.

An incredible Indian restaurant in a city where there are more than a few. Absolutely wonderful service and the food is superb. Best to book, especially at weekends, but the staff are so good they'll try to cram you in at most other times.

It's a short walk from Partick Station.
The only south Indian restaurant in Glasgow (most Indian restaurants do northern cuisine) and the food is amazing, offering authentic, well-prepared, tasty dishes not tried before.
Rice is combined with lentils to make wonderful dosas, idlis, vadas and uttapams. They are combined with sambhar (dal), rasam (tamarind dal), dry and curried vegetable and pachadi (yoghurt). Also cater brilliantly for vegetarians.

Wonderful food, although to be honest I can't get past the fabulous lamb curry. Incredibly busy with lunchtime specials from under £3.00, but a la carte is excellent too. Take away, sit in the cafe style downstairs restaurant, or in the more traditional upstairs restaurant.

Tapa is a cafe/delicatessen that only sells organic and vegetarian products. They bake their own bread, which tastes fantastic: being Italian my family is very picky about bread, but Tapa's bread never let us down. Interestingly, they mostly use local-sourced rye to bake bread.
They also do very good organic fairtrade coffee, and their own soups, ciabbattas, sandwiches and, mostly recommended, cakes.
Staff are very friendly and nice. You can dine inside, or even outside on the pavement, weather permitting. The cafe has a very "east-side" unpretentious look, but the quality on offer is not matched by more pretentious cafes in the city centre - so it is worth visiting Dennistoun on the east side to eat at Tapa.
