The Aonoch Eagach in Glen Coe is one of the world’s finest ridge walks. Do it before you die. If you’re fit, good with heights and aren’t put off by a stretch called the Crazy Pinnacles, you’ll be fine. There’s some climbing but you don’t need ropes.

We did it on a clear summer’s night and stood speechless on a peak, able to see up past Ben Nevis and right out to the Hebrides, mountains everywhere and us above them. A pint in the Clachaig Inn afterwards is compulsory.

About a mile down the road from Glencoe is a small, very old pub called the Clachaig Inn - its Boots Bar has a huge range (at least 100 different) of single malt whiskies.

Fantastic place to eat, drink and recover from a hard day out on the hill. Also has accommodation if you're not a hard-up climber. Can get pretty lively on winter weekends. Great selection of real ales and even better selection of single malts.

Glencoe valley would surely fill anyone with awe. Choose a spring summer day and get a bus which stops off at the Information Centre. From there just explore into the hills and the springy heather, get as high up as you can. The noise from the road disappears, and you become aware of the sheer vastness of the scenery. Watch the clouds rush over the hills and dream about living in one of the tiny number of cottages that sprinkle the hills. Stunning place.
