Piece Hall Book Shop

Posted by lucejane 6 November 2010

When thinking of destinations to travel to, Haliax in the north of England is hardly the first place that comes to mind. However, The Piece Hall is a magnificant Georgian Grade 1 listed work of art and is home to the world famous Piece Hall Book Shop. Upon entering the shop you are greeted by thousands of rare, specialist and one of a kind books ranging from crime thrillers to cartoons towering all the way up to the ceiling as well as the welcoming, albeit eccentric, owner. However, Piece Hall Book Shop is not alone as Legacy Comics is located just a handful of shops away and stocks every comic imaginable from your typical American magazine to small press books. Hours can be lost in this treasure trove so if you are in search of a mid-shopping rest there is no shortage of cafes for you to take your pick from. The Piece Hall is also a stone's throw away from the train station so it is easily accessible from wherever you are.

Wade Wood

Posted by mrsfifties 11 October 2010

Luddenden Dean in the Calder Valley is a hidden gem, and to strangle a metaphor, Wade Wood the jewel in its crown. It's thirty thousand years old; the valley sides of this part of the Pennines were left like this after the last Ice Age. The path up to the stunning settlement of Saltonstall is lined with holly hedges, the remnants of an ancient fence line. Apart from the odd planted tree, it's untouched by man. Luddenden Brook runs through it, there are shaded walks criss crossing throughout, rare plants, woodpeckers and deer - and you can camp very cheaply at the council-run Jerusalem Farm on the edge of the woods. Any time of the year, it's magical, and only five miles from the post-industrial West Yorkshire mill town of Halifax. A great little Timothy Taylors pub, the Cat I'th Well, nestles at the top of the valley.

One mile from the A646 between Halifax and Hebden Bridge.

This is a great little restaurant, tucked away near the river in Sowerby with great ambience and friendly staff. It outshines the area and gives hope that things are on the up for this Northern Milltown. The dishes are all vegan and range from huge seasonal dishes like aparagaus and new potato salad to baked plantains with spicy mango salsa. The puddings are great, really traditional and everything is prepared fresh in the open kitchen. The wine is organic too, but reasonable so a three course meal for two plus wine is just under £45 - splendid.
