Ripley Ice Cream is lovely. Not only is it the best, the height of ice cream you get in a cone seems gravity defying!!!
You get a choice of two freshly blended flavours a day (or you can have half and half - which is the best) and they taste amazing. They often have some really nice fruity frozen yoghurt flavours. The people who own the place are brilliant and there is nothing more satisfying on a sunny day that mooching around Ripley castle courtyard with a cone in hand.

Huge amazing rock formations that look like temple ruins. In the summer there are ferns everywhere and orange flowers and it almost feels like Mexico. Perfect for scrambling, picnics and climbing.

I was in Harrogate for work; my son had started at Bradford University the week earlier. We met up for me to hand over his new laptop which had arrived the day after he left for uni. I offered him lunch at Bettys, where we had last eaten when he was still in a high chair, but the queue out the door was too daunting.
Then that evening he just missed one train back and had a long wait so, rather than dive into the nearest pub, he opted to try Bettys again and we found it still bustling at 8 o'clock in the evening but with the teeniest of queues.
Greeted with heartwarmingly friendly service and the tinkly tink of the pianist who plays every evening, we each demolished a brown bread ice cream sundae before he dashed for the next return train back to student land and I headed back to my hotel.
To be honest Harrogate is a dull yet twee Yorkshire town. The shops are like something out of 'Are you being served' and the town is chock-a-block full of the twin set and pearls wearing Yorkshire Tory set munching on cucumber sarnies in Betty's rip-off tea rooms.
But the Turkish Baths are a real gem - now restored to former glory, these council run baths consist of a series of progressively hotter rooms. You plunge in ice-cold water in-between hot room sessions. Take a book and spend a 1/2 day relaxing - you'll feel great after. You'll be so relaxed you wont even mind forking out 15 quid for tea and cake in Betty's afterwards. Check out the photographs on the way in of various early twentieth century 'health' treatments that wouldn't look out of place in Abu Ghraib. Thankfully times have moved on since then.
A word of warning. In my experience some branches of the local hotel industry have yet to adapt to (let's be polite) those with expectations beyond clean bedding. For expensive amusement, look no further than the huge Old Swan hotel near the Turkish Baths. In this hotel (part of the Macdonalds chain) staff seem engaged in a bizzare game of cat and mouse seemingly to frustrate your every requirement. It is a real gem which National Heritage should preserve for the nation. Very soon there will be no hotels like this left. If you aren't from England, however, or you are not a fan of 1970's sit coms, you may wish it a wide berth. (Stay in Leeds and visit by train).
The Swan hotel is off Ripon Road nr the train station.
