Seaside special
John Webber
This seaside town lies at the heart of North Devon’s prettiest stretch of coastline, but is something of a mixed bag in itself. While there are sweeping, sandy bays to the south and breathtaking wooded cliff-sides to the north, Ilfracombe lies on a bed of slate, which gives the town its own particular character. Some of the seafront area still has a little of the old fashioned English seaside resort about it, but you now get the sense that it won’t be long before this gets swept away.
It has a very quaint harbour and this, together with the little restaurants and pubs that cluster around it, must be its best feature. It also remains an excellent base to see the area; nowhere else nearby on the coast can provide such an abundance of accommodation and a modicum of nightlife.
