Tucked away down Bashful Alley (a name straight out of Harry Potter) can be found the Old Bell Coffeehouse. This is an excellent vibrant little cafe tucked away down an old alley near the castle in the centre of Lancaster. Good selection of mains and snacks, prices were very reasonable. Although bustling, service was quick and polite. Mixed youngish crowd. Highly recommended

Whale Tail cafe is a vegetarian cafe/restaurant that is a Lancaster institution and has been around for many years. Recently they have opened the doors in the evenings from Thurs-Sun. The food is fantastic, ambiance delightful and the prices are incredibly reasonable.
Towards the top of Penny Street, Lancaster
Its originality of recipes and high ingredient quality mark it out from the rest. The wonderful informal Bistro atmosphere enables one to enjoy a meal in comfort and quiet if necesary. It also has some good bottled beers.
It is on Penny Street; slap bang in the centre of Lancaster's pedestrian zone; 10 minutes walk from the station or the Duke's Theatre.
One of the best restaurants in Lancaster! Located on the Quay, QSF is a French restaurant serving delicious food in a relaxed environment.
A great selection of fresh fish, meat and veggie dishes – try to go on Sunday/ Monday when they do ‘Simply Squiffy’ – three courses and a bottle of wine each for a set price (just try not to fall in the River Lune afterwards). Also look out for Quite Simply Food, their sister deli up on Moor Lane in town.
