Effortlessly hip bar tucked away in the northern quarter, friendly staff, good music and always something interesting to look at on the walls.

    Trof

    Posted by Pottsy4England 13 September 2006

A self-proclaimed 'eating and drinking palace', Trof is a miscellaneously decorated bar and eatery in the heart of Fallowfield. The staff and guests are sometimes a little too cool for school, and sometimes seem to care more about the playlist than the customer, but the hearty food is a winner - including the best vegetarian breakfast in Manchester. A recent enlargement means the upstairs area features live music - DJ sets, live bands and open mic - virtually every night.

Posted by happyhippo 13 September 2006

Nice quirky but chilled out pub, in an area usually dominated by student dives punting cheap vodka. Good music, regular DJ and poetry reading nights, good beer and the nicest food - the panninis are brilliant and portions are gigantic!

Fantastic beer bar with a great juke box, a nice beer garden and friendly, freaky staff. Best toasties in town.

A modern-version of an old-fashioned boozer with a good choice of real ale. Just across the road from Deansgate train station. Excellent food as well.

    Homoelectric

Posted by markinmanc 9 September 2006

An irregular club night, it's one of the best clubs going with four rooms and musical madness: be it indie, electro, dance or sometimes just plain cheese. Also features live bands. Hurrah for clubbing hedonism!

    Socio Rehab

Posted by hahahaharry 9 September 2006

The greatest cocktails in Manchester - expensive but only quality served. Service is fantastic, a great place with friends, on a pricey 'lash' or with a date. Dark, intimate, and, as I've moved 4000 miles away, occasionally missed, esp the cute bar maid ;)

    Sinclair's Oyster Bar

Posted by dazsnow 9 September 2006

Reconstructed using original plans and materials from a pub that was destroyed by the IRA (the pub was originally called 'The Shambles' which is funny because that's pretty much what was left after the IRA were done). This place has nice ale and German lagers (not much for the ladies here though) at very cheap prices. The inside has a very comforting authentic 'ye olde English' atmosphere and the outside (equipped with those head-toaster heaters) is very popular in the summer. The menu also features oysters quite prominently, hence the pub's name.

    Matt & Phredd's

Posted by owltoucan 9 September 2006

Matt & Phredds is an excellent jazz bar on Tib Street with live jazz every day (except maybe Monday). It has a wide range of European beers and international wines as well as really nice food - Middle Eastern style - pittas, olives etc as well as pizzas and various other snacks.

To get there head north along church street and go right at the intersection with Tib street, it's a black door on the right.

    The Hatters hostel

Posted by jimwhitters 29 August 2006

Large and airy, this hostel is in an old textile warehouse. It is in a great location for exploring the city centre by day and the Northern Quarter bars by night. Some of these drinking holes are quite difficult to spot, so sign up for the bar crawl, if you don't mind Australians.

    Label

Posted by redbarney 30 January 2006

Stylish and laid back this is a haven from busy Deansgate. The food is great as well, it is a good place to go for lunch at the weekend. Recently become much more popular, but I have never seen a Premiership footballer in there, they must all be next door at The Living Room. Label is much more low key.

    The Bay Horse

Posted by adelle 18 January 2006

Owned by the same lovely people as the Soup Kitchen down the road on Spear Street, the Bay Horse is a great, chilled out pub in the hip and trendy Northern Quarter.

Enjoy the great tunes at all times thanks to the eclectic musical taste of Chris the manager.

It's regularly packed out, especially after 5pm Thursday-Saturday, so get there early to bag yourself a table - my favourite is the one by the window.

There's a pool table downstairs for those partial to a game or two and a 'secret' garden out the back- best enjoyed in the summertime.

It's a cheap local Manchester bar right near UMIST and Piccadilly. By day old mans pub; by night alternative, vintage crew, indies local. If you can't be bothered getting dressed up, go here. Doubles £2! Staff friendly, music varied and at weekends and some week nights themed club nights are held downstairs. They're good fun.

Just near Spar off Piccadilly approach rd. 5 mins from Canal st. 2 mins from Granby row, 2 mins from UMIST. 5 mins from Oxford Rd.
