    Moulin Rouge Cafe & Grill

Posted by LikeToEatOut 26 November 2011

I’m surprised this café hasn’t been reviewed before. My daughter had mentioned this place to me several times but I didn’t think I wanted to eat there because of its location on Westgate Road among the motor bike shops.
It’s a small café selling authentic Persian food with a special Persian dish of the day, including minced lamb skewered kebabs, saffron marinated chicken with rice and flatbread everything made fresh that day.
This is also the place for a big Sunday cooked breakfast (under £5) to cure hangovers, popular with those staying local for the weekend. Couples and families take over on a Sunday afternoon.
On my first visit I ate aubergine dip, which is to die for (you could taste the smoked aubergine and garlic). I could have eaten a whole plateful with flatbread - the flatbread is made to order and takes a couple of moments to cook. Then I had the special of the day, salmon in a green herb sauce with rice, mint and coriander salad.
My daughter ate mixed meats, saffron chicken on the bone, lamb chops and lamb kebab with rice and endless cups of Persian tea. Cost was £15 for both of us, bargain. (I’m working my way through the menu and have never been disappointed.)
It’s a café so don’t expect linen table cloths, the staff were friendly, the food tasted delicious, they explained the dishes are authentic and not adapted to the western palate and for that reason I love it.

Nice and simple English food locally sourced. I love fresh food and this comes very fresh indeed. Hidden away, but worth finding it for the great food at very good prices. One of Newcastle's best kept secrets. Small but mighty.

    Eemaan Kurdish Restaurant

Posted by kelimp 31 December 2008

If you're tired of Italian, Indian, and Chinese restaurants, then this might be just up your street.
Eemaan is a Kurdish restaurant in Newcastle,so when I saw it I felt I just had to try it. The food was delicious and the surroundings friendly. I got an even better surprise when I checked out the bill, which was fabulously value-for-money.
Kurdish food, I found out, is mostly rice and delicious casseroles with fresh naan, washed down with loads of mastow. The Kurdish and middle eastern people drink lashings of this yoghurt drink. If you've still got any room left after the huge portions, try a steaming hot Kurdish tea which they brew in a samovar and a selection of pastries.
This restaurant makes cooking rice an art form, and I loved the yummy naan. If you've never tried Kurdish food before, I wholeheartedly recommend that you do, although a word of warning - as a halal restaurant it does not serve alcohol.

A very bohemian restaurant on ‘arty’ Heaton Road – extremely popular retreat with a loyal following, offering a variety of tasty and unusual dishes. Booking in advance essential. (Also doubles up as a sort of community activity centre, offering meditation classes and a book club!)

Simply the finest fish and chips in the country. If the fish were any fresher it would be flapping on your plate. The portions are massive, the mushy peas reassuringly green and you eat off real formica tables. Tea, bread and butter accompany your order. It doesn't get any better than this.

    Laing Art Gallery

A very good regional gallery & museum. A couple of very good Landseer's overlook the cafe's interior. Seeing the paintings by John Martin (a local) is worth the visit alone; also, a good walk around of Newcastle's history. Family friendly.

New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8AG.
On the "Blue Carpet" at the bottom of John Dobson Street. Five minutes walk eastwards from Monument Metro.

It is a bar with grandeur and cosiness. It has snugly couches, friendly staff, a very pleasant atmosphere and good food options. The nicest station bar I’ve ever seen, by some distance (not much competition).

    Pani's Cafe

Posted by murphdog 30 November 2006

By far the best Italian food in Newcastle – if not the whole North East of England. Tucked away on the cobbled side street High Bridge, it’s a charming little eatery that must have been around for the best part of ten years. Genuinely family-run and yes, genuinely Italian speaking – a rarity amongst the rest of the pseudo Italian restaurants in Newcastle. Once upon a time it would just open during the day, but now much expanded and offering a full evening menu. Good wine, fantastic Italian coffee, delicious food, amazing regional specialities, friendly staff. What more can I say? Apart from great prices, of course.

    Blakes Coffee House

Posted by skipperoo 26 November 2006

Centrally located on the stylish Grey Street. This equally stylish coffee house offers great coffee, snacks and lunch menu; its desserts are simply fabulous! Offers a great chilled ambience and plays jazz to its varied and hip clientele. A regular favourite so can get busy - does offer street seating in the summer. Just a great place to soak up city vibe and eat tasty food. Mid-range prices, good veggie options available.

The Seven Stories is an ongoing project that preserves original manuscripts and artwork from renowned childrens' authors such as Allan and Janet Alberg, JK Rowling, Tony Ross, Michael Bond. This is a fun, interactive environment for children and adults that subtley encourages reading and learning through play.

Also there are regular events where authors and illustrators will visit, give a reading of their work and sign books for visitors too. The ground floor is also host to an excellent bookstore dedicated to the very best in children's literature.

Workshops are regularly available throughout the summer and the cafe is well worth a visit for a quick refuelling and a nice view of the river! Or if a big lunch is required pop along to the Cluny, where they do a mean handmade beef burger, with handcut chips and salad.

See www.sevenstories.org.uk for information about events, and detailed directions.

Seven Stories 30 Lime Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2PQ.

Close to Byker Metro Station, but if you are feeling energetic take a good walk along the Quayside or get off at the very last stop on the Q2 bus (Runs Haymarket-Quayside) and ask your driver for further directions.

Chic and sophisticated bar that serves great Italian style snacks and the most delectable cocktails made from the best spirits, liqueurs, fresh fruit, herbs and juices. My favourite is a Basil Grande, a beautiful strawberry Martini with fresh basil and cracked black pepper. Excellent friendly staff, happy to advise on your choice of tipple and even happy to make cocktails off menu.

See www.paradiso.co.uk/index.htm for further information and to check out the sister establishments - Paradiso also comes highly recommended for their fantastic light lunches, made with locally sourced ingredients.

Despite its location in Newcastle, Mangos is truly a world class restaurant, world class in the authentic Chinese sense. You could as easily be in New York or San Francisco or Hong Kong... until you walk out the door that is. Fantastic dim sum, particularly after midnight!
