Egg rolling in Preston

Posted by gdeanouk 31 March 2012

Preston’s Avenham Park has been the scene for Easter egg rolling for well over a century. Last year was the first time we had visited this event, and couldn’t believe the huge numbers of people that it attracted. This year’s Easter Monday event promises to be bigger and better than ever as it coincides with the Preston Guild celebrations. From mid morning until late afternoon there will be mass egg rolling down the grassy hill on the hour every hour. Between egg rolling sessions there will be a variety of entertainment, including an Easter bonnet competition, music, fairground rides and plenty of other family friendly activities.

Brockholes nature reserve

Posted by Zumbido 25 July 2011

Brockholes is brilliant! Just off junction 31 of the M6, it is a 107 hectare wetland and woodland reserve, created on the site of an old quarry by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, and an excellent motorway stop-off. The revolutionary visitors' centre opened earlier this year, and is built to the highest environmental standards (it is one of a very small number of buildings to be rated 'Outstanding' by the Building Research Establishment). It floats on a 4,000 tonne pontoon in one of the lakes, and houses a really good cafe, a farm shop, and information centre. You have to pay for parking (from £1 for an hour), but it is for a good cause, and worth it for the views from the restaurant alone. But if you have time, take a walk (guided or otherwise) by the lovely river Ribble, or do a bit of bird-spotting from the purpose-built hides.

Brockholes Nature Reserve

Posted by bakers13 22 May 2011

Disused gravel pits have recently been adapted to create an environment that provides habitat for different wildlife. There are newly created wildflower meadows, reedbeds and woodland. You can stroll by the River Ribble or follow walking trails around the lakes. There is a stunning Visitor Village floating on one of the lakes with a restaurant and shops. Opened Easter 2011 so some areas look a bit bare.

The Waterfront

Posted by daveoto 2 October 2006

A great pub sitting on Preston marina at docklands, 4 real ales including Tim Taylor's Landlord and 2 guest beers. Fantastic reasonably priced food, home-made pizzas and sizzling fajitas a speciality.

Facing the marina at preston dock; open all day everyday.
