There are no shortage of places to drink in St Andrews with pubs scattered throughout the town centre. However many places are often quite expensive so I went in search of a good inexpensive bar.
The cheapest place is the students' union, you need to be a student or have a lifetime membership to get in though.
The next best place is probably the Gin House, the drinks are still pricey but there are often good drinks promotions which give you a low cost option and the place has a good vibe.
The next best would be the Vic which is a few minutes from the Gin House. There is often karaoke for those more adventurous people and the food and drink is pretty good.
Also if you want a cheap room for the night then try the Tourist Hostel which is in the town centre. It's dead cheap and in a great location.
Shops: There is a small selection of shops in St Andrews, it's a great place for tartan products such as kilts and also for golf products.
Attractions: Golf is the main one but the old cathedral and castle are well worth a visit, they are both located next to each other.
Nightlife: There are no clubs in St Andrews but there is a great selection of bars, The Gin House and Ma Bells are two popular places.
Eating: There is a large selection of fine dining options in St Andrews, but if you are on a budget then The Grill House offers well priced food.
Accommodation: For a small town there is a large selection of five-star hotels, The Old Course and Fairmont are the two best hotels. For those on a tight budget try The St Andrews tourist hostel or one of the many B&Bs.

Inside a rather dour, grey building is The Grill House, a bright and vibrant Mexican-influenced restaurant.
The Grill House is always full - they do a fantastic £4.95 lunchtime menu which changes regularly and their evening menu is crammed full of delights such as pizza, chilli, fajitas, steak and Mexican stew ranging from £6.50 to £14.00.
The atmosphere is friendly and informal and the decor is warm amd inviting so it can't fail to cheer you up on a dark and dismal winter day.

A St Andrews institution. Jannetta's is an ice cream shop dating from 1908. They make fifty-two flavours of ice cream and they are all wonderful, so much so that people queue along the pavement at the first sign of warm weather in early Spring.
31 South Street, near the corner with Abbey Street.
