A trout, pike and coarse fishery, Esthwaite Water is a completely natural lake with stocked with Rainbow Trout. At over 280 acres you can find a quiet spot even during peak seaon. The Pike fishing season lasts all winter and the largest caught was 38lb!

Brantwood House

Posted by thelakedistrict 15 July 2008

Country house previously owned by artist John Ruskin. Near to Lake Coniston, so, if it's a nice day, combine with a walk along the lakeshore or even up nearby fell Coniston Old Man.

Ravenglass

Posted by thelakedistrict 10 July 2008

The only coastal town in the Lake District National Park. Delightfully quiet, off the main lakes tourist trail that combines a visit to the Lakes with a seaside holiday.
For the historians in your group, there is a Roman bath-house known as Walls Castle - one of the few remaining Roman structures in England.

Ravenglass is on the A595 which runs along the Cumbrian Coast south of Marypot and Whitehaven.

Very helpful, responsive and efficient company offering self-catering accommodation in the Lake District. We enjoyed our stay at High Spy in Keswick, a nice flat ideally located for the town and surrounding attractions.

The Lakeland Pedlar

Posted by sanfrancool 19 June 2008

This has to be the best veggie cafe in the Lakes.

I had an awesome breakfast, looking over the mountains, in the (very rare!) lakeland sunshine. Great food, good portions, and a cool bike shop upstairs too.

They offer a wide range of treatments including sports therapy, massage, acupuncture, herbal medicine and homeopathy.

I dropped in on a friend's recommendation after having injured myself biking. Their sports therapist soon had me fixed up and on my way.

Summerhill Country House

Posted by Mfifty 27 May 2008

This is a beautiful and B& in the heart of the Lake District. Luxury accommodation and a superb attention to detail make it a weary traveller's paradise. The owners have put their life and soul into the restoration project of this beautiful old house and they have made the wise decision of choosing quality all the way.

The views are stunning, the breakfast excellent and the service second to none. I highly recommend a break away from the hectic life we all lead. I only spent two nights and have come back to Ireland ready for anything. Book ahead as this place is not going to be a secret find for long.

A Lake District bus pass

Posted by idlerach 16 May 2008

A four-day bus pass costs £21 - you can hop on and off buses over a wide area, walk from one valley and come down in another and generally avoid driving and finding parking spaces! The open top bus along Borrowdale is great fun!

Fantastic area. Beautiful scenery, great little villages, pubs and shops. We stayed in a couple of cottages we found on the Lovetoescape portal - loads to choose from. Why holiday abroad when the exchange rate is bad, home has so much to offer.

Mirefoot Cottages

Five-star rated and pet friendly - very rare these days. With a two-acre garden, tennis court and only 15 minutes from Windermere it is close enough to explore but not too close as to be suburban!

Ullswater

Ullswater is beautiful, tranquil and worth visiting - whatever the time of year. Walk round the lake, catch the steamer, or drive round - it's marvellous!

Summerhill has just been opened for B&B by new owners. We stayed there the first week it was open. We can't speak highly enough of how comfortable and peaceful it is. It has fabulous views and is a short walk from the spectacular Tarn Hows.

The rooms are luxurious and extremely well equipped with not just TV and internet available but you can choose from a wide choice of music or films streamed straight to your room. We are a little biased because we know two of the owners as friends, but I can honestly say we have never stayed in a better furnished or more welcoming B&B.

I really don't think you'll be disappointed if you try it, and it's probably worth getting in before it becomes well-known and booked up.

Visiting Ullswater

Posted by works4me 26 January 2008

Beautiful spot with great walks on the east around Place Fell. Take a trip on the Ullswater Steamers to get a good sense of the lake and, if you're feeling adventurous, head up Hevellyn from Patterdale or Glenridding.
