    A Lake District bus pass

Posted by idlerach 16 May 2008

A four-day bus pass costs £21 - you can hop on and off buses over a wide area, walk from one valley and come down in another and generally avoid driving and finding parking spaces! The open top bus along Borrowdale is great fun!

    Haisthorpe House

Posted by smistry 28 August 2007

My husband and I booked ourselves into a very welcoming and friendly guest house (B&B). Spacious and affordable rooms. We paid £32 pppn for a lovely 4 poster room. Really helpful and friendly owners.

It is situated in the central area of Windermere in Lake District.

    Honister Slate Mine

Posted by neontree 24 April 2007

Located near Borrowdale, The Honister Slate mine is a hidden treasure. It is located in one of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of the Lake District and even your drive up there will take your breath away.

When you get there, you can take trips into an amazing working slate mine. You can see giant underground caverns, old slate mining equipment and techniques and much more. During the summer you can also take a trip around the edge of the mine - a hair-raising high and narrow foot path.

The staff here are great and the experience second to none. The tamer tours are great for kids but there is plenty on offer for all ages.

The only drawback to the mine is that it can be quite hard to find. The National Trust are apparently quite reluctant to signpost this attraction - goodness knows why.

It is located on The Honister Pass in Keswick. There are more details on the website.

    The Jumble Room

Posted by onlyagame 31 January 2007

One of the many pleasures of eating at The Jumble Room is the feeling that you are almost sat in front of the telly with your food on your knee.

There's no TV, I hasten to add, but the knockout indulgence is all there with the added benefit of the food being amazing, heartwarming and restaurant quality. The staff are so friendly you may start thinking they are actually long-lost relatives and scratch your head a bit when they ask you to pay the modestly priced bill.

Best B&B in England. Just across from lake with wonderful views. Full English breakfast delicious, but the owners are the reason that I have travelled to Grasmere from the US for 11 years. They embody the spirit, the heart and the soul of the Lake District. They make the impossible a reality for so many people; whatever the dream, they seem to make it come true whether it's viewing a manuscript of Wordsworth's, going up Helvelyn in a wheelchair, or getting to some remote place without a car, it has happened. Grasmere hospitality runs deep in their Lake District veins, and those who experience it return year after year to recapture the part of themselves they left behind.

    The Mortal Man, Windermere

Posted by IC 15 March 2006

The best thing about staying in the Lakes is waking up to amazing views - and this place doesn't disappoint. All 12 rooms look out across the Troutbeck Valley. The bar is suitably cosy and serves real ales and there are more views from the Garden restaurant. Rooms from £45pp b&b.
