    Chinese New Year

Posted by barbwilliams 7 January 2008

Giant dragons dancing in the street, eating lettuces and followed by loud drums and even louder firecrackers. A funfair, street food and families just out for a days' fun. All in a compact, interesting and friendly area.

In the city centre, go up Bold Street (where the WAGs shop) and follow the crowds. It's in February.

    Chilli chilli

Posted by MaccaT 7 January 2008

A Chinese restaurant near the Chinese arch which has a more interesting Sechuan menu alongside the usual choices. Makes a refreshing chnage from the more bog standard food we are offered.

Brilliant casual cafe style Chinese restaurant. Don't bother with main courses - just keep ordering starters. They are great.

    The Yang Sing

Posted by malcy 13 September 2006

Maybe I'm missing it on the guide to Manchester, but I can't find it! Is it because everyone thinks it's so good that it doesn't need a rec? A few years ago, the then Times food writer (Mathew Norman?) described The Yang Sing as one of the best restaurants in Britain; no, not one of the best Chinese restaurants, but one of the very best.
Unless that's changed dramatically (I've been out of the UK for a couple of years), I entirely agree. Terrific dim sum, a huge choice for dinner, and they also are a marvellous place for Chinese New Year, but also Christmas. And also very helpful staff.
I love some of the restaurants near Leicester Square, but The Yang Sing, for me, is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Europe, if not the best outside Hong Kong.

    Mangos Chinese restaurant

Posted by Rosenblum 5 September 2006

Despite its location in Newcastle, Mangos is truly a world class restaurant, world class in the authentic Chinese sense. You could as easily be in New York or San Francisco or Hong Kong... until you walk out the door that is. Fantastic dim sum, particularly after midnight!

Moso Moso is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Manchester. Scallops with salt, chilli and garlic is a particular favourite. The wine list is extensive too. Service is always excellent.

    Mr Wolf's

Posted by ourmaninbristol 16 August 2006

Late night bar with a combination of Chinese and Mexican on the menu. There's live music every night and open mic evenings. It's a place where Bristol bands from across the music spectrum come to play. Just beware the absinthe.

    Teohs

Posted by ourmaninbristol 10 August 2006

Great tasting and very affordable Thai, Malaysian, Japanese, Singaporean, Indonesian and Chinese food. The seating is communal and informal. The food is prepared before your eyes in the open kitchen which gives Teohs much of its atmosphere. An Oriental supermarket is attached next door. There's a second branch of the restaurant at the Tobacco Factory in south Bristol.

    Canary Wharf

Posted by ambersoni 22 May 2006

It's like nowhere else in London. Some might say sanitised and boring, but I'd disagree. If you're tired of the hustle and bustle of central London hop on the Jubilee line, or, even better, the DLR, and come over. Great waterside eating and drinking (dimsum at Royal China is fantastic, and not too costly), super tall buildings, and expensive subterreanean shops. Whilst it is certainly not the weekend ghost town of earlier years, it still feels much calmer than London proper on a Saturday or Sunday.
In the summer especially there are often good free events in the small parks that are dotted around, such as concerts on Friday evenings, and films sometimes on Saturdays.

If you're coming with children then combine your visit with Mudchute City Farm down in the Isle of Dogs. It has cows, goats and guinea pigs, plus a riding school.

    Tai Won Mein restaurant

    Posted by vicky76000 23 November 2005

Cheap & tasty fried noodles, udon or noodles soups - every which way (meat, seafood, vegetarian) - a massive, speedily served plateful for under 4 pounds.
Not to mention the charms of the Cutty Sark & Greenwich park on the doorstep. Top tip: don't order starters, very few people manage to finish their main courses as it is.

This chain of noodle restaurants is so much better than Wagamama, and quite a bit cheaper (and you get your own table). Get the jasmine green tea with free top-ups and tuck in to their hot and sour seafood noodles - delicious!

    Shanghai

Posted by worthyis 8 September 2005

Chinese Restaurant in Dalston. Located in an old pie and mash shop, Shanghai is by far the best Chinese in east London. On Sundays, they have an all you can eat buffet, which includes duck with plum sauce and pancakes.

A lovely low-lit restaurant just off Charlotte Street, serving top-end Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese food in a French colonial-style townhouse.

Not the cheapest but perfect date or anniversary territory.
