Cafe Ark

Posted by Curly2 4 June 2008

Lovely little cafe next to the Mersey Valley visitor centre. Great quiches, pizzas and sandwiches. Home made breads and cakes. Great veggie breakfast (served all day) - yum. Small and friendly and will go that extra yard to suit your wishes.
Walk or bike from Chorlton and cross the meadows.
Scrumptious.
Super for lunch.

Sale Water Park, M33 2LX. Just off the M60.

Three 18th century barns converted into fabulous contemporary holiday houses. With a private cook, housekeeper and swimming pool, our stay felt more exclusive and more relaxing than any five-star hotel.

Shelley's, Lynmouth

Posted by lhawk 1 June 2008

Exmoor has some fabulous walking - we were in Lynton & Lynmouth, the 'walking capital of Exmoor' and had three splendid days' walking, staying at Shelley's in Lynmouth. Four National Walking Trails pass through the twin villages, or you can just follow one of the many shorter local walks, they're all great!

Castle Accommodation

Posted by Gfoz 28 May 2008

I recently stayed in a self-catering castle with friends in Scotland. With all the talk of the downturn in the economy, maybe we should consider holidaying within UK and Europe.

A company called Celtic Castles offer castle accommodation all around the UK, Ireland and France. Some have been converted into hotels while others (like Castle Law that I stayed in) are now self-catering properties.

The thing I was surprised about was how little it cost. It worked out at less than 100 pounds per person per night, there are some offers available at the moment so this will be even less now.

Definitely worth considering!

Summerhill Country House

Posted by Mfifty 27 May 2008

This is a beautiful and B& in the heart of the Lake District. Luxury accommodation and a superb attention to detail make it a weary traveller's paradise. The owners have put their life and soul into the restoration project of this beautiful old house and they have made the wise decision of choosing quality all the way.

The views are stunning, the breakfast excellent and the service second to none. I highly recommend a break away from the hectic life we all lead. I only spent two nights and have come back to Ireland ready for anything. Book ahead as this place is not going to be a secret find for long.

Secreted in a tiny village between Torquay and Exeter this restaurant is a delight. Using mostly local ingredients to create excellent menus at what - at least to London eyes - are very reasonable prices.

A Lake District bus pass

Posted by idlerach 16 May 2008

A four-day bus pass costs £21 - you can hop on and off buses over a wide area, walk from one valley and come down in another and generally avoid driving and finding parking spaces! The open top bus along Borrowdale is great fun!

Bored of the same old flocked wallpaper and run-of-the-mill korma combo? Anokha is the antidote. Meaning ‘unique’, this contemporary city Indian features leather chairs and low lighting. Classic regional curries sit side by side with an excellent selection of modern Indian fusion dishes, and Anokha prides itself on using only fresh, wholesome ingredients and no artificial colourings or preservatives.

Start with a delicate scallop puree, then move on to the bold sweet and sour flavours of Mali duck, cooked with mango puree, yoghurt, tamarind, garlic and ginger. An excellent wine list and friendly service.
