Really nice modern townhouse, well equipped and close to the centre of town. Great views across the harbour and up and down river. We'll certainly book again.

This gem of a resort has something for the young and not-so-young alike. Arriving by bus or train, saunter up to the West Pier and Whitby Sands for a dip in the sea, or take a boat trip round the harbour. A fish-and-chip lunch is a must - try the famous Magpie Cafe, a Whitby culinary landmark! Cross over the swing bridge to the old town and wander along the cobbled streets, taking in the Captain Cook Museum, until you eventually reach the 199 steps leading up to the clifftop St Mary's Church and awe-inspiring Whitby Abbey. 'Dracula' would never have been written otherwise!

Housed in a 1930s building in Whitby’s main park, the Whitby Museum is stuffed to the gunnels with so many interesting objects that we’ve visited three times and still not seen everything.
Set up originally as a showcase for fossils, since Whitby lies at the heart of the Fossil Coast, it certainly has an impressive collection of beautiful and gigantic marine reptiles.
It also has a Captain Cook room with objects collected on the voyages of the Resolution and Discovery. The notebooks of William Scoresby, Artic explorer and artist filled with his exquisite drawings of hundreds of snowflakes done using a hand magnifying glass. An entire room devoted to ships in bottles. Collections of butterflies, birds eggs and nests hidden in glass cases under felt cloths to keep the colours bright. A case filled with brightly coloured replica corals. More than 500 pieces of jewellery and curiosities made out of jet (fossilised monkey puzzle trees which grew along the coast of Yorkshire) including a gibbet complete with noose, mourning jewellery and chess sets. A model Noah’s Ark, painstakingly carved and painted by Napleonic prisoners of war. Dolls, a Witch post, china, mummies, coins, pressed flowers, clocks, costumes, domestic objects like gingerbread moulds and corn dollies – the list goes on and on.
The museum is staffed entirely by friendly volunteers from the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society (established in 1823) who set up the museum to avoid the giant fossils being “lost” to the town.
It even has a charmingly clunky website www.whitbymuseum.org.uk

For cream teas, forget Devon and head for Falling Foss Tea Gardens, five miles south of Whitby. Located in an idyllic woodland setting beside the waterfall of the same name, the tea garden has been lovingly restored to its early 20th century appearance by owners Jack and Steph, who unfailingly offer a warm welcome whatever the weather. Reopened in 2008, the tea garden has established a reputation for its home baking, not least the freshly baked scones, accompanied by generous portions of home made raspberry jam and lashings of cream, all for £1.50! Young and old are catered for, with play equipment in the garden and children of all ages are invited to participate in pooh sticks from the nearby footbridge. The tea garden is popular with walkers and ramblers, with the Coast to Coast path passing nearby, but most customers are there for just one thing – the cream teas.

Whitby as a stunning place to visit on a day when the weather is nice. Atop the cliffs, next to the sea, you will find incredible views and historic Whitby Abbey.
A tour around the abbey will cost you a small some. However, for a family day out it is well worth while. There are usually exhibitions on show in the building outside the walls of the Abbey. Also, the history of the Abbey is given here, so it is very educational for the kids.
The ruins are quite well maintained and safe. They are beautiful on a lovely summers day. Although they can get busy during peak season.
The views to be had over the top of the cliffs and out over the North Sea are also amazing.
Whitby North Yorkshire. Once you are in the town, just follow the signs up the cliffs. Or you can park nearby and walk around the Abbey's walls. www.hotels-uk-accommodation.co.uk/north-yorkshire/whitby-abbey/
There are hundreds of B&Bs to choose from in Whitby - and this is one of the best. Simply decorated, quirky rooms with fabulous fixtures in this elegant Georgian town house, handy for both the harbour and the buzzy town centre.
The vibe is very relaxed - not a single 'do not do this/that/the other' sign in evidence; the welcome's warm and the breakfast stupendous.
You'll return again and again - you can afford to -it's within everyone's pocket.

Cobbled streets, tiny whitewashed cottages tumbling down to a massive expanse of beach, seagulls wheeling - Robin Hood's Bay is a haven of peace. Walk along the cliffs towards Ravenscar, shimmering in the distance, the moors rising above the headland, cloaked in heather. Stroll back along the sands, where there are rock pools and fossils - a happy hunting ground for grown ups and kids.
The light is pearlescent - and the fish & chips at The Bay Hotel very good indeed.
I recently went to Whitby for a short break with my husband and two children. We rented a really lovely cottage from an agency called Marmadukes. It was a really lovely period conversion and very well maintained and comfortable. It was great to have a bit of luxury rather than the usual basic rental style of property, and the price was very reasonable considering!
It is worth queuing for an hour to get in here. Unbeatable! The local authority were proposing to fine people for blocking the pavement! I'd happily become a "criminal" to eat here.

It is the coolest (honestly it is!), eco friendly, low impact, bohemian campsite with 9 vintage caravans set in 20 acres of north Yorkshire national park with woods, streams and wildlife.
Can take couples and groups of up to 16 for romantic or special occasions. Each caravan is decorated with retro items and collectables and has comfy beds with vintage eiderdowns. The site has hot and very romantic showers and is lit with lanterns. It has outdoor fires and a tipi and canvas marquee as lounges
I can recommend it and it has a great customer comments book!

Trencher's is a fantastic fish and chip restaurant. It isn't a takeaway - you eat in. The fish and chips are fantastic. Obviously you can't go to Whitby without having fish and chips at least once and I recommend here.

This tapas bar/Spanish restaurant has fantstic food, wine, service and ambience, all for a very reasonable price. Booking is essential as it’s small. We (4 of us) had a fantastic meal with wine for about £100.
