Chips with everything
"Las Vegas looks the way you'd imagine heaven must look at night," Chuck Palahniuk.

Las Vegas is one of those rare cities that lives up to expectations. The casinos really are as busy at 4am as at 4pm; you really can see replicas of the great pyramid, Venice, the Eiffel Tower and the New York skyline within a mile of each other and it really all does go on to the accompaniment of a neon glow and the constant ringing of the slot machines.

Gambling runs behind everything Vegas - you’ll realise this as soon as you see the one-armed bandits in the airport – but there is more to the city. See the fountains dance outside the Bellagio, stuff yourself at one of the hundreds of restaurants, catch one of the world class bands that seem to be permanently playing, or just wonder at the glorious excess of The Strip’s over the top hotels.

The unstoppable activity and noise of Vegas can make the city feel like one big panic attack. But if you want a bit of relaxation it’s easy enough to find. The desert surrounds the city and the Grand Canyon, an hour away by helicopter tour, shows that for all of Vegas’s splendour, humans have got a long way to go before they top any of Mother Nature’s wonders.
