A mere block from the fun and sun of the beach resort, they are also ideally situated for the shops, restaurants and nightlife in the Art Deco district which attracts travelers from all over the world.

Dorm beds are surprisingly cheap considering all rooms have their own bathroom and staff are friendly and helpful.

A really interesting place to visit with its architecture and elaborate detail – and fascinating to try and work out just how they managed to make it look so genuinely 16th century.

A combination of older gentlemen rolling their (lovely) Cuban cigars and hip youngsters hanging out outside the McDonalds, this is the sort of place that needs to be seen to be believed.

Regular DJs include Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez and Eric Prydz (who I’ve been lucky enough to catch) and this huge club is always packed full of revelers dancing the night away!

Its reputation as one of the best dance clubs in the States attracts an excitable crowd that are often visitors from other cities meaning there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends if you feel the need to take a break from raving…

It takes on the character of the sunset, or of a starry night. The city sparkles in the distance and the sea glimmers and glints and you feel like you could be a movie star yourself.

I go to Miami once or twice a year to see my family and this is always where I take people for a drink now. It's really good for post-work drinks if you're working in the area because it's in the financial district. The exhilarating ride lasts for about 40 minutes and goes out through the waterways, which are actually made up of one big grass river.

You’re transported on a larger boat right out to the edge of the park where the Everglades meet the Gulf of Mexico, then dismount into kayaks in groups of about eight.

The guide, friendly and knowledgeable Captain Charles, leads you up small creeks, through mangrove areas and stops for a while on a sandy beach on one of the island.

Spring and autumn are said to be the best times to go because of the migrating birds and water levels - which encourage more wildlife - but even in summer we saw brown pelicans, egrets and herons, rosette spoonbills, ospreys, terns and dolphins.

It does great drinks, and there’s a lively, buzzing atmosphere.

It’s on Lincoln Avenue too, which makes it a great place to start on a night out.

It’s not horribly expensive, and about three dishes will fill you up.
