I think the best American road trip book ever is John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, a non-fiction book Steinbeck wrote in 1964 about his country-wide wanderings with his standard poodle Charley in his converted truck - not so much about the places as the people and always through Steinbeck's most excellent plain-spoken and plain-seeing lens. Great novel set in and around the downtown art scene of the 70/80/90s.

This is theatre just for children, but parents will love it, too. Great for those who may be still too young for Broadway manners. This troupe takes stories, written by children, and sets them to words and music. Very talented group, full of imagination and fun.
Shows on Saturday only.
The Drama Bookshop on 40th Street & 8th Ave, near the major shows; shows are on Saturday only; www.storypirates.com
Part autobiography, part history - captures Manhattan in a way few books do. A clearly heartfelt love letter to downtown.
