Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay, which is on Hwy 1 just a short drive from San Francisco, serves some of the best Italian food to be had anywhere.

It is not cheap but for Brits with the exchange rate as it is now, it is very inexpensive. Go for the seafood/fishy options. Seafood risotto is superb.

I could go on and on, but if you appreciate great Italian cooking - GO THERE! It made a great start to our Pacific Coast Hwy trip.

I'm almost reluctant to share this one in case it gets too popular - but the seafood here is out of this world. Tadich is a San Francisco institution. Reputedly the oldest restaurant in the city. Check opening hours as it's in the financial district so may close earlier than expected.

This is a fantastic restaurant where you can sit and look out at the sea lions from the side. We had a delicious meal here last summer. It was great to find such a good place to eat in a very touristy area, and very reasonably priced. Look a the website and see the amazing choice on the menu. It doesn't include the desserts, which are yummy. I had an Apple Granny which was so big I couldn't finish it but they packed it for me to take out.

Remarkably fresh oysters - some taken from the water the morning they are served - available any way you can think of and shucked (opened) fresh after you order. The best clam chowder I have ever had - made with fresh clams as well as other great cooked seafood meals. All set looking over the harbour amidst some other fine restaurants. Best eating I have had in three months of travelling.
