    Avoid Yang Sing in Manchester

Posted by gastronaut 30 December 2006

Other read posts directed me to Yang Sing in Manchester, where I had the worst Chinese meal I've ever eaten yesterday.

Food was barely edible, service was slow and unfriendly. If you want great Asian food, go to London, New York, Paris or Hong Kong.

I see this person has rubbished an entire city's Chinese restaurants on one unverified experience. Manchester has one of the biggest collections of Chinese and other oriental cuisine restaurants (in the city and in the suburbs) so I would entirely disagree.

I am originally from London, and I have visited New York and Paris and I can definitely say the best Chinese restaurants I have been to in the last 20 years are in Manchester, equalling choice, variety and quality of New York and London.

I have also been to the Far East and I can confidently say many of the Chinese restaurants in Manchester are as authentic as you can get outside of the Far East. Paris? definitely not. If you want bland oriental food then by all means go to Paris.

I'm not sure that Yang Sing really deserves such a negative review. I eat there regularly, usually the set meals, and have always been happy with the quality and range of the food. I have eaten in many of the highly regarded Asian/Chinese restaurants in London including the likes of Hakkasan and Roka and, while they are all stunning, I feel that Yang Sing can more than hold its own in comparison, particularly so if you take the price into account.
