Beautiful forested national park up in the Apennines.

In late June we felt we virtually had the national park to ourselves.

Wildlife is protected here so, unusually for southern Europe, you will (if you're quiet and alert!) actually see wild boar, deer, as well as numerous butterflies, wild flowers...

Refreshingly cooler up in the mountains too.

40km east of Florence. You can fly Ryanair to Forli then drive 30km south to pretty town of St Sofia which is on the edge of the national park.

On wild boar: When camping in Camaldoli we had several encounters with wild boar - they seemed less shy of humans in this area. Pizzeria Pucini, 1km SE of the village, left scraps out in their back yard and we sat eating our dinner watching through the window while the piglets ate theirs at the same time.

A warning though: don't leave food in your tent! One evening when we were away from the tent a boar virtually turned the thing upside down and ransacked our provisions. My All-Bran seemed to go down particularly well.

Where to stay: St Sofia, just North of the park, is pretty. At an altitude of only 300m it's a little warmer than the mountaintop villages, and being less isolated feels a little less unsophisticated - the restaurant even served seafood there on busier days.

St Sofia's youth hostel is better than many two-star hotels - with large en suite double rooms - although the rooms with views do overlook a bar which can get noisy on Saturday nights.
