Probably the best museum in the world for marble sculpture
Patission avenue, Athens
There's much more than just the marble sculpture - wonderful ceramics and golden jewellery and masks from Mycenae. The highlight for me is the bronze lifesize statue of Zeus (or is it Poseidon?) found in the sea at Artemesion, caught about to throw either a thunderbolt or a trident. The figure is so wonderfully sculpted you expect him to spring into life any moment. Unfortunately the upper floor, housing the Minoan wall paintings from Thira (Santorini), is still closed I believe.
The upper floor housing the wall paintings is now open again (I was there 24th September 06) and is well worth including in a visit.
