The tram system in Krakow imposes heavy penalties on unsuspecting tourists. The inspectors are completely intolerant of tourists ignorance and are very aggressive. It is a particularly nasty and unpleasant experience. Be warned, and don't make innocent mistakes. They take no prisoners and it appears that they treat tourists as easy targets.
As in any big central European city there is an adult and sensible approach to paying for public transport. You buy a ticket and validate it. Very simple. Did you expect the transport in Kraków to be free? Inspections are rare but if you are unlucky and caught - then deal with it.
One thing to note that isn't immediately obvious is that in Poland if you are carrying a big bag on the tram you need a ticket for the bag as well as for yourself.Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
