A sensible mid-price option for accommodation in/near Arusha, located on the east side of the city and therefore towards Kilimanjaro airport. Six ensuite chalets (some sleeping up to four people) occupy a lush garden, with a dining area nearby. It is not far from the main road to Moshi, but it would be a great challenge to find the place for the first time after dusk.

We recently had a very disappointing stay at Klub Afriko. It is located deep in a scary slum, not even walking distance from a single commercial establishment. There is no phone or internet access there. So the only way to get out unless you have your own vehicle is for the manager to call one of his taxi driver friends, who gouge you for the taxi fare. Although the garden was pretty as seen on their website, the inside of the bungalow was awful. There was no mattress, just a thin foam pad and scratchy sheets. A single light bulb hung from the ceiling. Barely tepid water dribbled from the faucet and the bathroom fixtures were gross. The curtains were not wide enough to cover the windows, so there was no privacy. The electricity went out for most of the day and we were told to make do with the candle that had been left in the room, probably because it is a frequent event. There was not a single other guest there, although the manager kept insisting the other guests were just out. But we never saw or heard a thing to indicate there was anyone else staying there. I could not sleep a wink for the music the restaurant blared out until 12:30am. Perhaps the most disturbing event was when the manager told me that I must leave my passport with him before I left to go to use the internet at another hotel. I said no. He coldly insisted, saying "it is hotel tradition." Again, I refused, but his tone gave me a chill. So after a long night with blaring music, no electricity and only the sound of a few locals using the room next to us obviously on a "hourly basis", I was exhausted and uncomfortable with continuing to stay there. We went and registered at another hotel. When I called Klub Afriko, I told the manager to please give his taxi driver friend our suitcases to bring to us and I would give his friend the money for the room. He said, "no, you come back and we'll talk it over." I said no. Minutes later he came storming over to our new hotel and had a heated confrontation with their staff, whom I had asked for help. They defended me and helped me get our suitcases back. It was an ugly scene. I don't know what is wrong there, but the experience gave me the creeps. I know how hard it is to tell what a place is really like from a website, and I had believed that Klub Afriko would be a nice safe place to stay. Instead we were very uncomfortable, unable to sleep and harassed when we decided to leave. I'd like to spare anyone else the experience.
