    The Union Bar

    Posted by Chrissy1 24 November 2009

The Union is different to any other cocktail bar in Copenhagen. It is sophisticated and full of old school charm. Resembling a secret, dark hide- away in New York in the beginning of the last century, The Union takes it’s inspiration from bouncing prohibition days and unfolds behind a black, discreet door in St. Strandstraede, Copenhagen. The bartenders were dressed to the nines in white shirts and bowties taking a particular pride in giving us the absolute best service in town. The Union is the perfect place to meet for drinks before a dinner in the exclusive neighbourhood of Kgs. Nytorv but don’t be surprised if you yearn to come back for post dinner drinks and a night cap. Perfect for intimate rendez vous and cheerfull encounters.

St. Strandstraede. Opp. # 19 Look for the black door. Ring the golden bell. Nearest metro stop is Kgs. Nytorv.

Last Friday night I was at The Union with two friends, one Danish and another American. We were enjoying some nice cocktails when the owner, Paul, sent over two shots for my friends (I was away from them @ that time). The American drank her shot, the Danish girl did not, as she wasn't feeling well. Paul went after this girl - kept asking why she hadn't drank her shot. He turned very bitter, and told the bartender to charge the girls for the two shots that they did not order. Then, he called my (very lovely) Danish friend a vulgar name that begins with c and ends with t. He went on to say how much he hates Danish women. We left immediately. It's quite sad, because I wanted to love the Union. But its co-owner from Newscastle made us feel very bad that night, and I think his establishment is a toxic one. I'm an American and I happen to love Denmark, and will not support any business owner that will hungrily take the money of Danish people, while despising them at the same time.
