    Gellert Baths

Posted by GavCollins 1 November 2005

A must for any Budapest visitor is a trip to the Gellert baths. Heated by geothermal energy, the baths offer an interactive adventure into the post-imperial era, whilst dressed in nothing more than a loin cloth.

The entry price is the only thing you will find in English, but it's no problem and ends up adding to the fun.

Don't be put off by the 20+ stone masseuses, stay your nerves and be sure to spend an hour there.

The women's half of the complex is undergoing restoration from January to June 2007, then the men's side will be restored (June to December 2007). This means men & women share facilities and swimming costumes are required. The atmosphere is like a crowded UK municipal swimming pool on pensioners' day. The art nouveau interiors are great but shabby and the fittings are in a poor state of repair. The massage I had was quite painful: the masseur was determined to make all my joints "click" from my neck to my toes!
