    Go anywhere besides Perth...

Posted by matthk 12 November 2005

Perth is the world's most isolated city (i.e. it's further away from any other city than well, any other city on the planet) and this (for some) unfortunately fosters some of the western world's most 'isolationist' thinking.

Sadly, the most bigoted major city in Australia, it's often the first choice for English and Scots of a 'particularly narrow mindset' if you know what I mean, who are looking for somewhere to retire. Perth folk (yes, sure there are ALWAYS exceptions) often don't seem to like ANYONE, but they seem to have a particular problem with Aborigines and Asians (not the Indians, Pakistanis etc. that Brits incorrectly call Asians, but the Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. - whom Brits often offensively refer to as Orientals).

Perth is not the city with the 'pioneer spirit' that most Brits seem to imagine. It's not the last great frontier, it's actually Australia's most conservative (culturally and politically) city whilst also being the home-town of our most notorious white-collar criminals!

I recommend stearing well clear of Perth but if you simply HAVE to visit Western Australia, then go to Fremantle, Margaret River, Busselton etc. instead. Then kick yourself repeatedly while booking a flight to Sydney, Adelaide or Melbourne, cities where you'll find the REAL Australia.

The last time I looked at an atlas, India and Pakistan were in fact in Asia, along with China, Thailand and Vietnam.

I lived and worked there for a year and encountered one of the most multi-cultural societies around, particularly in the workplace.

I have no idea what this person's problem is, but please ignore his rant.

Having lived in Perth for almost 15 years, I think the above entrant was in a different place. Perth is a very tolerant and multicultural place, I know people from all different nationalities, religions and backgrounds who live harmoniously. It's true there are a lot of English expats there but most moved there to embrace the Australian way of life - not to re-create Britain.

Perth has a great way of life, slow but with all the modernness of a city. The people are friendly and laid-back, the beaches are great and its isolation is what gives Perth its charm.

I would definitely ignore the above entry as clearly the reader does not know what he is talking about.

Great to know that you're helping keep Perth the best kept secret in Australia. It's a great town with the most friendly people, booming economy, small CBD, great beaches and an environment to die for.

Having worked in tourism for a while, all the visitors I have come into contact with say that our city is pretty relaxing and as a stop over for some of the greatest environments and unspoilt wildernesses. But please don't come if you don't like friendly, down-to-earth, relaxed lifestyles. Go to Sydney or Melbourne and be part of the rat race.

As to multiculturalism we have a great mix of people from all corners from Finland through to China and you know, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

This might sound a bit strange but when you get to Perth go and buy what you see people wearing around you. Clothes are cheap (look for a shop called Target or K Mart) and you only need some shorts and t shirts. Don't buy the stuff with koalas or 'Perth' etc printed on the front and don't wear socks with anything except trousers. The less you dress like a visitor, the less of 'whatever it is' you will get. All the best and bring ya sunnies - you'll need them.

I couldn't disagree more. I was born and raised in Perth, but have lived in Sydney, London and Dublin for the past few years. Sure, there will be the odd person with a narrow-minded view, but no more than you will find in London or any other city for that matter. Most of the major tabloids here run campaigns blaming the influx of 'foreigners' for all Britain's problems - you certainly wouldn't find that in Perth. Western Australia is an amazing, varied state with a lot to offer. Perth is the gateway to that, so don't let this guy put you off.
