New York is made up five boroughs. But when visitors arrive they mistake Manhattan between Battery Park and 96th street for the entire city. Don't get me wrong. Manhattan from the neck down is great. But try the amateur night at the Apollo in Harlem, Williamsburg or Fort Greene in Brooklyn or the Bronx zoo. Take a bridge or a tunnel. Get out and see the city.
Also check out the ethnic restaraunts and neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn. They're in all the boroughs but Queens has the best Uzbek restaraunts, for example, and can easily be found in the yellow pages. Also don't miss walking the streets and boardwalk in Brighton Beach (Little Odessa), riding the Cyclone in Coney Island, and the Turkish restaraunt Sahara in Brooklyn.
Park Slope is the Richmond of NY - 5th and 7th Aves are well worth a visit.Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
