This (free) English Heritage property is the site of a ruined medieval castle and the shell of an Elizabethan mansion. It's great for hide-and-seek, Easter egg hunts, makes a perfect Camelot and is an ideal backdrop for moody teenagers reading Jane Eyre. Living only a few miles away, the money we save on fuel can be spent on a good picnic and if it rains, we're home in ten minutes. Go on, find somewhere local and low key - do you really want to waste time in bank holiday crowds, queues and jams?
