    Lynchburg

Posted by mariaglp 8 October 2012

Take a tour of the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. It's free, much more fun than it sounds and if you're lucky, you get to inhale 120% proof spirit - JD in the making! Afterwards, stop by the lovely little town of Lynchburg itself. True enough, it has capitalised on the tourist trade and it gives more than a passing nod to it's world famous product, but it retains enough soul and style to offer a sense of real old fashioned small town America. With its pretty square, dominated by the red brick courthouse and porched shops, you can really imagine life here 50 years ago. It's straight out of an Edward Hopper painting. It even has a dinky gas station.
Sit on a rocker outside one of the stores and play checkers. This is the South. You can do that without buying anything. Then drop into the friendly Barb-b-que Caboose Cafe and have pulled pork and raspberry lemonade.
If you're lucky your visit will coincide with one of the regular Bluegrass sessions held in the cafe. As the balmy southern evening draws in locals suddenly arrive en mass. Expect to be chatting with ease within minutes as the Southern hospitality stereotypes happily come true. Don't expect to sup on anything stronger than the lemonade though. Lynchburg sits in a county that has opted to stay with Prohibition. Cheers!
