Enormous monument in the middle of nowhere to the thousands of Soviet troops who died during the battle for Berlin in 1945. Centrepiece is a giant statue of a Russian soldier stamping on a Swastika. The Stalin-era friezes are marvellous, if chilling.

Awesome site and something which we visited as an extra to our day - and were truly glad we did! However, be aware that some construction work is ongoing at the north entrance to the site to improve the paths...don't despair, just enter the memorial around the side of the work!

The Germans (east and west) know how to honour the dead Soviet soldier heroes who fell in the last battle to defeat the Hitlerites. The German government maintains these graves with great care and many buses from Russia are often parked outside with visitors. Often Russian couples living in Berlin have their wedding pictures taken here - it is their part of Russia here in Germany.

Compare this with the scandalous and loathsome attitude of the Estonian government to move monuments to the Soviet war dead. The Estonian government did allow some monuments in support of the SS in Estonia during the war! Nice people those Estonian government people.
