Accessible only by dirt road or on foot, this long moon shaped beach is as far removed from the usual image of Spanish beaches as is possible. Fringed by cacti and barren volcanic peaks, the shallow waters offer safe swimming and fantastic snorkelling. Falling within the Unesco declared Cabo de Gata Biosphere Reserve it is a haven for birdspotters and geologists, or anybody who just wants a quiet day on the beach.
The town of San Jose is a short walk along the coast offering everything you might need for a beach holiday but still manages to avoid becoming a 'Costa' town.
