You can get unlimited travel on the vaporetti with a 24-hour pass (10.5 euros) or 72-hour pass (22euros). Considering a single trip on the Grand Canal costs five euros, it’s pretty good value. We got a 24-hour pass on our last day there and it was the best 10 euros we spent.

The 24- and 72-hour fares have now gone up to 12 euros for 24 hours and 25 euros for 72 hours, which is still very good value.
A monthly travel pass costs 26 euros, an initial outlay of 8 euros when you buy one for the first time. If you like chugging around on the vaporetti (and who doesn't?) it might be worth getting one if you're there for a week, and you can use it on the bus back to the airport.
A very good tip this one - thank you. Now costing 30 euros - we got our 3 day pass on our first morning and certainly had our moneysworth. The rides out to the islands are all included so we really made the most of it. When our feet were feeling a bit tired we hopped on and rode somewhere else. It is also a very good way to ride the length of the Grand canal and around the outside of the main island.Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
