    Fukuoka Live

Posted by Jon Wilks 1 February 2006

Fukuoka Live has been in existence since early 2004 and has since grown into a highly respected local service. Founded by an Oxford University exchange student, this website is essentially for chat, though it includes plenty of information on local events, restaurants, culture, plus a whole lot more.

If you can't find the information you're after, you're bound to find someone online who can point you in the right direction. For security reasons, this service is only open to Fukuoka-based residents with Japanese mobile phone accounts. Newcomers recognise it as an invaluable resource.

Actually non residents with a valid interest in Fukuoka or Kyushu can join for a small one off administration fee. It is indeed a great free service for Kyushu foreign and Japanese residents.

If you are visiting Fukuoka and make a good case they may let your participate from the UK before you arrive. Fukuoka was the first stop on my first trip to Japan and through Fukuoka live I met some charming and helpful people who helped with my entry into Japanese life. It is a wonderful resouce. FukuokaLive is a poorly designed website with extremely limited search and communication functions. It is also much more profit oriented than it represents itself to be--donating money is the only way to activate basic functions (such as saving your messages for more than a few days) that are provided for free by similar websites. Even so-called gold members (those who have donated cash) are still stuck with the limited search functions and rudimentary profile setup.

The other problem with this site is the lack of members. Not only is the number small; the de facto list of active members is much, much smaller. I rarely see more than 2 or 3 people (yes, you heard right: two to three) logged in at the same time, and more often there is only one or none at all. I suspect many of their profiles belong to members who no longer live in Fukuoka, or who no longer bother putting up with the site's limitations because of the availability of superior options.

For social networking in Fukuoka, *any* of its competition, including kyushuconnection, Fukuoka Now, even MySpace (!) would probably suit your needs better. (The number of options more than doubles if you add free dating sites to that list.)

FukuokaLive tries to represent itself as special by making you jump through a lot of hoops to join (giving a mobile e-mail address, etc.); only after you've done all that do you realize it wasn't worth the hassle. Skip this one.
