    El Gran Cafè

    Posted by mseymour 25 February 2006

    Excellent restaurant, part of a small group of seven or eight eateries in Barcelona. Not a tapas bar and not cheap (100 euros for two for three courses, drinks and aperitifs / digestifs), but excellent food and a really nice classy atmosphere. Booking recommended.

    Avinyó 9, Barcelona; down a side street of La Ramblas (Mcdonald's is on the corner) just past la Bocqueria;

    In Barcelona, never order meat in a fish restaurant or fish in a meat restaurant. El Gran Cafe's menu is for serious meat-eaters. Avinyo is off Ferran, where you will find many popular restaurants and bars.

    Four years ago, I would have agreed. Went back last week 1st of June 2007. Had booked four days before. Shown to our table straight away, given menus then ignored for 35 minutes. Finally got to order meals, wines and aperitififs.

    Friends had gin and tonic, my wife and I ordered vodka and tonic. The gin and tonic arrived but no vodka and tonic, tried to attract the attention of waiters - when one acknowledged us he told us that they did not have any vodka.

    Starter was OK. Main course was abysmal - no presentation - cold pureed potatoes - oversalted food. Basically just thrown on the plate.

    No one asked if the meal was alright at anytime. When the girl came to clear up she stood at the table scrapping the food from all of the plates onto one. Classy or what?

    The price as mentioned was over 100 euros per couple so not cheap. Service and food has gone downhill badly.

    I don't know what has happened in the four years between our visits, but would I recommend it now? No, I wouldn't!
