One of the many tributaries running up to and across Avenida Paulista. This is a trendy part of town notable for its multitude of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Keep your eyes peeled for the street art. There's some interesting graffiti and amusingly designed stickers to be found here. If you're hungry there is great sushi to be had at gohan cozinha oriental - R.Augusta 2542.
Rua Augusta
By night it's the largest open-air red light district in Brazil. I was in Sao Paulo in 2000 and was put in a hotel around the corner from it, and my first cab back through that scene is not something I'll forget in a rush. Just thought I'd mention before you take your wife/mum/kids there.
Augusta is back to the 'cutting edge'; the street was a red-light district for a couple of decades (80's & 90's) after a history of setting the trends. Now(2009) it's rebirth claims the top spot among Sao Paulo's jewels. The New York Times issued the story, as Augusta sets a new global standard for cultural riches, fashion, arts and intellectual material.
