The most beautiful old, low-lit bar, which actually makes its own ouzo and liqueurs on the premises. Even if you don't want to have a drink, pop your head in the door and have a look - stunning. And with an outdoor rooftop cinema, The Cine Paris, just over the (pedestrianised) street, perfect for having a few drinks and waiting for the sun to go down before going to see a film.

Agree 100% with bigdave. But Brettos has just been sold - new owner plans renovations (some are needed). He also says he won't destroy the unique character of this wonderful bar. Here's hoping....
I agree with Big Dave and John Caradoc, a marvellous place. John Caradoc and I visited it last weekend when I was over for the weekend and perched on the - it has to be said - less than comfortable high stools and had a most enjoyable couple of hours sampling the brandy, wine and beer. Excellent value and a real sense of time travel; you expect to look over your shoulders and see a couple resembling Toulouse Lautrec's absinthe drinkers over by the still. I too hope it isn't over-renovated - it needs to be well photographed and stories of its life captured, postcards, filming etc. Lastly a word for the very welcoming lady - we did not catch her name - behind the counter who made our visit welcoming and memorable. Can't wait to go back!Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
