    Osteria al Garanghelo

Posted by patriddell 4 April 2006

In a city of overpriced and, often, poor cuisine (compared to the rest of the country) this place is a real find.

Basic, no-frills Italian cooking and all the better for it — pasta, risotto, minestrone are all superb. And the owners make you feel more than welcome.
Possibly the best, and cheapest, dining in Venice.

    Calle dei Boteri 1570-1571,
    San Polo,
    30125 Venice.

We were glad to have this tip (and loads of others from this site for our first Venetian trip) and it was v.close to our hotel. But it did cost us over 60 euros for a starter, main course and a half litre of house white - so not so cheap. The welcome was friendly and the waitress happy to explain dishes in English. Maybe it was the hour (or February - even during Carnivale) but by 19.30 the dishes were all being re-heated (we sat by the kitchen). The food was o.k. but for 5 euros more the Osteria Mocenigo -a couple of 'streets' across and of the same name - was excellent. Also frequented by plenty of Italians if you eat at lunch time they do a menu del giorno for 15 euros for 2 courses and salad, chips or a veg.
