    St Mark's by night

Posted by helbelle 5 April 2006

Buy a slice of pizza and a bottle of wine, then sit on the steps looking down towards the shimmering moonlit cathedral and watch everyone come and go, the couples slow dancing to the string quartets dotted around the bars and restaurants. It's wonderful, and as good as free. Be prepared, however, to fend off approximately 400 rose sellers an hour.

Be careful: there is a Regulation of the Metropolitan Police Ordinanza saying "It is forbidden to sit down in spaces not specifically designated for this purpose along the porticoes and steps of the Procuratie Nuove and in the walkway along the Ala Napoleonica and the Sansovino Library in St. Mark's Square, in Piazzetta dei Leoncini, along the portico of the Doge's Palace, in Piazzetta San Marco and on the pier. Infractions carry a fine of €25 to 500€ (under art.7 bis of Leg Decree 267 of 18.8.2000)".

That is to say, all the Piazza San Marco and around it....
