Get to Iceland without flying. Once a week a ferry goes from Lerwick (Shetland) to Seydisfjordur in eastern Iceland (May - Sept). There is the possibility to stop off in the Faroe Isles. Potentially rough crossing though, and it takes 30 hours.

The ferry from Lerwick was halted in the middle of the financial crisis, but it is still possible to get there by boat. Take the ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg, then drive up through Denmark to Hanstholm to board the ferry, which will take you to the Faeroes and Iceland. It might seem a roundabout way, but it will be worth every hour and penny spent. If you can manage to work in a few days in the Faeroes even better. I will never forget the anticipation as the boat neared the Icelandic coast at 05:30 in the morning, with practically the whole boat up on deck eagerly searching for the first glimpse of land; followed by an excellent Nordic breakfast in the restaurant, then the sail down the fjord to dock in Seyðisfjörður!
