    Cafe Einstein

Posted by LukeHarding 28 July 2005

The coffee is expensive, it’s full of tourists, and it’s next to the fortress-like US embassy. But Cafe Einstein is still the best place to hang out and watch the world go by while sitting on the pavement of Berlin’s most famous avenue. Good food, too. My favourite dish is Tafelspitz, beef served with horseradish. Gerhard Schröder Germany’s (soon to be ex-) chancellor comes here sometimes with his wife, Doris.

Cafe Einstein at Kurfenstrasse is the original one in this chain. It is a beautiful 30s building which merits the longer walk than the Unter den Linden branch. Brunch on a Sunday is fab, sitting in the bustling restaurant with genuinely lovely waitresses and hordes of happy eaters you feel as if you are part of decades of tradition. I recommend the Einstein breakfast - you will need to be hungry.
