Salobreña is the weekend getaway for the people of Granada, but despite this, its sandy beach is quiet. The locals are very friendly, and the town itself is pretty, with a castle and a less commercialised atmosphere than nearby Malaga and Nerja.
Regular buses from Granada, which is 80km (50 minutes) away.
Lovely as Salobrena town is, it's a bit like Concorde - more stunning to look at from the outside than inside. La Caleta is a fishing village that has fantastic views of the sea, the surrounding delta plain and the rock and castle of Salobrena. It's a twenty minute walk up to the hill town of Salobrena or a mooch up the beach to the seaside extension of the town. The whole area is incredibly popular with city Spaniards in the summer, and roads are apparently jammed solid.
Two years ago (2005) there was a very helpful tourist information centre in Salobrena who were able to recommend a number of reasonably priced hostels. Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
