Go to Koh Samui and try to see past the white guys hanging around with Thai girls. It's an amazing island with chilled, beautiful and reasonably-priced resorts. Easy to explore other islands from here.

Yes, Koh Samui is a good base. I stayed in Bophut in the north, in the most beautiful bijou French-owned cocooning hotel: very reasonable price for such an upmarket area; only 6 rooms individually designed.
