    Fisherman's Wharf

Posted by mummybear 9 July 2006

What isn't there to do here? Take the cable car on the Powell/Hyde line. Get off, walk through Ghiradelli Square to try and blag free choccy samples, take lots of pics of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate, grab some clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, maybe some crab too, trek over to Pier 39, shop and wave at the sea lions. Find a bench and watch the perfect sunset over the bay.

No offence Mummybear, but I found Fisherman's Wharf to be the worst part of the whole city - it's like Brighton Pier and Camden market all rolled into one - miles of shops selling gaudy tat, no decent restaurants and an overall atmosphere of touristy exploitation on every corner.

Each to their own, of course, but for my money the Haight or the Mission are far more engaging.

    Take care

If this blog is purely about shopping then Fisherman's Wharf is not the best destination. If cheesy tourist schmaltz is what you are after then it's perfect. Head to Union Square for all the shops within a small area.
