    Graffiti in The Mission

Posted by BryceEdwards 19 July 2006

San Francisco has some fantastic graffiti. The best is possibly found in the Mission District, and is normally quite political. Just wander around and you'll see a fair bit of it.

This is one of the photos I've taken of SF graffiti:

There's a so-called 'mural walk' off 24th Street between Folsom and Harrison (not far from the 24th/Mission BART station) - varying in technical quality from the juvenile yet intensely colourful to the street-art chef d'oeuvre, and all intensely political. Lots of references to working-class hero Cesar Chavez (as might be expected), plenty of feminist slogans and lots of depictions of Mexican and Californian folklore. Plus, one of the best taquerias (Mexican restaurants) in SF, 'Taqueria Vallarta', is at one end of the alley - try their beef tongue tacos with plenty of crema fresca (creme fraiche) and cilantro (coriander). Additionally, there is the Womens' Building on 18th Street at Guerrero if you like the truly Chicano (Mexicali) style of street art, which differs markedly from the New York style to which most are accustomed.
